Things to do
Last reviewed · verify live conditions with Parks Australia
Start with culture, then match walks to heat and fitness. Climbing Uluru is banned. Stay on marked tracks. Official activities and live status: walks · Cultural Centre.

Culture first
Park pass → Cultural Centre → free/self Mala before stacking Base Walk or Valley. Protocols beat kilometres.
Heat filter
Early starts, serious water, turnaround rules. Full Base and Valley are cool-window upgrades — not day-one obligations in summer.
Base honesty
Overnight Yulara strongly preferred. Alice same-day returns crush cool-hour walk time and culture sequence — see the honesty itinerary.
- 1
Cultural Centre first
Culture · easy · park gateway
Non-negotiable orientation: public Tjukurpa context, protocols, and free ranger-guided activity times. Start here before long kilometres.
- 2
Mala Walk (free guided when scheduled)
Easy · culture first · free guided
Preferred cultural entry on Country — short, formed, high value. Confirm free ranger-guided times the same day; self-guided still excellent after Centre orientation.
- 3
Kuniya walk to Mutitjulu Waterhole
Easy · short · families
Short public return with intimate rock scale and waterhole contrast. Stay on the marked track; follow photography rules.
- 4
Uluru Base Walk
Moderate · early start · heat realism
Full public loop (~10.6 km, Grade 3). Early start, serious water, partial completion as success. Cooler months more realistic for the full circuit.
- 5
Kata Tjuta — Walpa Gorge or Valley of the Winds
Kata Tjuta · heat closures · cool day
Separate cool window from Uluru when you can. Walpa is the smart default on warm or tired days; Valley is Grade 4 with heat closure rules.
- 6
Sunrise & sunset viewing
Viewing · crowds · photography ethics
Designated public zones only — arrive early for parking, plan cloud contingency, keep pathways clear. Pair with culture, not only a sky gamble.
- 7
Guided tours & Field of Light-style products
Optional · tours · Yulara logistics
When logistics hurt: hop-on transfers, sunrise packages, ethical scenic flights. Prefer operators that respect cultural protocols. Park passes stay official-only.
- 8
Desert packing & heat kit
Packing · safety · Amazon kit links
UPF clothing, multi-litre water, electrolytes, headlamp for pre-dawn runs, blister kit. Heat is the main antagonist — pack like it.

Mala Walk
easyThe preferred cultural introduction at Uluru: a short, formed walk along public rock faces with free ranger-guided sessions when scheduled. Pair with the Cultural Centre first — never skip culture for a longer loop. High value per kilometre, low ego cost.
- Grade
- Easy — formed path; sections wheelchair accessible (confirm on-site)
- Time
- 1–1.5 hours with a guided session; shorter self-guided
- Distance
- About 2 km return

Kuniya / Mutitjulu
easyA short walk from the base to Mutitjulu Waterhole — a lush public contrast in the desert when water is present. Stay on the track; this is a culturally significant area with strict stay-on-path rules. Intimate scale, high protocol.
- Grade
- Easy–moderate short walk
- Time
- 30–60 minutes
- Distance
- About 1 km return (confirm on-site)

Base Walk
moderateThe full public loop around Uluru’s base: roughly 10.6 km, Grade 3, commonly around 3.5 hours. Start early, carry serious water, and abandon the plan if heat or fatigue hits. Partial sections are valid successes — completion is not a moral duty.
- Grade
- Grade 3 — formed track, some uneven sections, exposed
- Time
- About 3.5 hours typical (photos and heat dependent)
- Distance
- About 10.6 km loop

Liru Walk
moderateThe linking walk between the Cultural Centre and the Mala area. Valuable when open — and a classic “check before you go” track because it has experienced temporary closures due to weather. Never build a rigid itinerary that depends on Liru without a vehicle backup.
- Grade
- Easy–moderate linking walk (confirm grade officially)
- Time
- 1–1.5 hours one way
- Distance
- About 4 km one way (Cultural Centre ↔ Mala area — verify)

Walpa Gorge
moderateThe more accessible Kata Tjuta walk into Walpa Gorge — roughly 2.6 km return among the domes. Ideal when Valley of the Winds is closed for heat, when energy is limited after an Uluru morning, or when you want dome scale without a Grade 4 commitment.
- Grade
- Moderate gorge walk — rocky underfoot
- Time
- About 1–1.5 hours
- Distance
- About 2.6 km return

Valley of the Winds
hardThe flagship Kata Tjuta circuit: roughly 7.4 km, Grade 4, with lookouts that can close when temperatures hit high thresholds (commonly described as ≥36 °C closing sections beyond the first lookout from late morning — always verify the current official rule). Start early or do not start.
- Grade
- Grade 4 — steeper, longer, more demanding
- Time
- About 3–4 hours for the full circuit (confirm officially)
- Distance
- About 7.4 km circuit (full); shorter options to lookouts

Sunrise / Sunset
easyDesignated sunrise and sunset viewing areas deliver Uluru’s famous colour shifts — deep reds, oranges and purples — without climbing or leaving public zones. Crowds and parking are real; arrive early and stay in signed areas. Cloud contingency is part of a competent plan.
- Grade
- Easy — viewing areas and short paths
- Time
- 1–2 hours including arrival buffer
- Distance
- Short walks within designated viewing zones
View guide →
Beyond walks
- Designated sunrise and sunset viewing (public zones only)
- Free ranger-guided activities when scheduled
- Hop-on hop-off or resort transfers for car-light days
- Guided cultural products that respect protocols
- Ethical scenic flights (high-altitude, authorised operators)
